Nghiên cứu cắt ngang được tiến hành từ tháng 3 đến tháng 7 năm 2011, trên 810 bà mẹ và trẻ em từ 0-36 tháng tuổi tại 3 xã phường thuộc 3 huyện thị đồng bằng ven biển tỉnh Khánh Hòa nhằm mô tả tình trạng suy dinh dưỡng (SDD) của trẻ và một số chỉ số chính về thực hành dinh dưỡng của bà mẹ. Kết quả: Tỷ lệ SDD trẻ em theo các thể nhẹ cân, thấp còi, gầy còm, béo phì tương ứng là 10,1%, 18,4%, 3,6%, 2,6%. Không có sự khác biệt về giới ở cả ba thể SDD (nhẹ cân, thấp còi và gày còm). Tuy nhiên, có sự khác biệt lớn về tỷ lệ SDD thấp còi giữa các nhóm tuổi, cao nhất là nhóm 13-24 tháng tuổi 26,6%. Tỷ lệ bú mẹ hoàn toàn là 37,3%, bú mẹ chủ yếu là 27,6%, bú bình hoàn toàn 3%, ăn bổ sung (ABS) sớm trước 6 tháng tuổi 29,4%, đa dạng khẩu phần ăn tối thiểu đạt 89,6%. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy cần tiếp tục tăng cường tuyên truyền giáo dục về nuôi dưỡng trẻ nhỏ cho bà mẹ để tăng tỷ lệ bú sữa mẹ hoàn toàn, thay đổi tập quán ABS sớm nhằm giảm tỷ lệ SDD ở trẻ em, đặc biệt trẻ em dưới 36 tháng tuổi.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to July 2011 among 810 children 0-36 months old and their mothers in three communes in 3 coastal plain districts of Khanh Hoa province to explore the situation of child malnutrition and some key indicators of child nutrition care practices of mother. Results: The prevalence of underweight, stunting, wasting, and obesity was 10.1%, 18.4%, 3.6% and 2.6%, respectively. There was no difference between genders in the three malnutrition types (underweight, stunting and wasting). There were major differences in stunting rates among age groups. The highest rate of stunting was observed in the group of 13-24 months old (26.6%). The rate of exclusive breastfeeding (for children under 6 months of age) was 37.3%, predominant breastfeeding was 27.6%, and full bottle-feeding was 3%. Early initiation of complementary feeding (before 6 months of age) was 29.4%; minimum diversified diet was achieved by 89.6% of the studied children. These results indicated thateducation and communication on infant feeding for mother should be continued to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding, and to delay the early initiation of complementary feeding aiming to prevent of malnutrition in children, particularly children under 36 months of age.
