The Institute was assigned the tasks of researching the nutritional needs and meal structure of Vietnamese people, proposing to the State measures to improve health, prevent and treat diseases in accordance with the nutritional needs and socio-economic development conditions of the country in each period; analyzing the nutritional value of food; researching food hygiene, food testing; therapeutic nutrition and at the same time training nutrition staff for the country.
The establishment of the Institute of Nutrition marked an important milestone for the nutrition sector of Vietnam. The Directors of the Institute through the periods include Prof. Tu Giay - People's Physician, Hero of Labor (1980-1993); Prof. Dr. Ha Huy Khoi - People's Teacher (1993-2002); Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong Khan - People's Physician (2002-2008), Prof. Dr. Le Thi Hop - Meritorious Physician (2008 - 2013), Prof. Dr. Le Danh Tuyen - People's Physician (2013 - 2022) and currently Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Duong.
Since its establishment, the Institute of Nutrition has undertaken two key state-level research programs coded 64-02 (1981-1985) and 64D (1986-1990). In the following decades, the Institute continued to implement many State-level projects such as KH-11-09 "Research on strategic solutions to improve nutritional status and ensure food hygiene" (1996-2000) and KC 10-05 "Assessment of some nutritional factors that pose risks to public health and intervention solutions" (2000-2006) and many other Ministry-level and Institute-level projects. The research results were applied in implementing the national nutrition strategy, the child malnutrition prevention program and other specific interventions. Nutritional intervention activities have significantly contributed to eliminating dry eye leading to blindness due to vitamin A deficiency in children; reducing the malnutrition rate in children under 5 years old from 51.5% (1985) to 21.2% (2007). The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF have assessed Vietnam as the only country in the region that has achieved a reduction in malnutrition close to the level set for the Millennium Development Goals (2%/year). In March 2008, Vietnam was selected by the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition as the host country and successfully organized the 35th Conference to share experiences in preventing malnutrition. Since 2005, the Institute has published 8 valuable books and hundreds of articles published in domestic scientific journals, 62 articles published in prestigious international scientific journals...
