The Institute of Nutrition was established on June 13, 1980 under Decision No. 181/CP of the Government Council. The Institute of Nutrition has the functions of scientific research; training of staff; professional guidance at lower levels; communication and education on nutrition and health; international cooperation, providing scientific and technical services on nutrition, food and food safety nationwide.
In 2010, the National Institute of Nutrition was honored to achieve the noble title of Labor Hero conferred by thePresident.

1. Scientific research:

  • Research on nutritional needs and meal structure of Vietnamese people.
  • Research and monitor the nutritional status and dietary intake of people; research nutritional epidemiology and health issues related to diet.
  • Research on food science, building nutritional composition tables of foods in Vietnam.
  • Research on food hygiene and food safety.
  • Research on clinical nutrition: methods of treatment by diet; development of nutritional regimens according to disease.
  • Research and propose solutions to improve nutritional health status and ensure food safety.
  • Participate in consulting and commenting on policy issues related to nutrition and food.

2. Training

  • To educate Doctor of Philosophy in medicine as per Decision of the Prime Minister.
  • To provide continuing or in-demand education and training for participants who are implementing nutrition, food and food safety activities in the nation.
  • To educate post-graduate degrees, graduate degrees, technicians and other education programs in collaboration with colleges and universities (master, specialist I and specialist II in nutrition).

3. Nutrition Information Education and Communication

  • To coordinate with other departments to develop education and communication content, material and methods on nutrition and food safety
  • To perform interdisciplinary coordination in nutritional communication and education, and social mobilization to eectively implement nutrition and food safety activities.

4. Nutritional Network Coordination

  • To assist the Ministry of Health to direct, support, and technically guide in nutrition and food for the community and clinical nutrition systems in the country.
  • To participate in directing and providing technical guidance for food safety assessment and control system.
  • To organize, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs and projects on nutrition and food safety.

5. International cooperation

  • International cooperation in scientic research, staff training, infrastructure and facilities development, and equipment improvement.
  • Apply scientic achievements in the eld of nutrition, food, and implement programs and projects relating to nutrition and food safety.
  • Staff members exchanges between the Institute and other international partners not limit to study, research, work abroad, and eld work.

6. Public services

  • Implement nutritional interventions, programs and projects.
  • To create and manage the nutrition surveillance system; develop the database on nutrition epidemiology; and participate in food safety supervision missions.
  • To implement nutrition and food safety education and communication activities, guide to implement proper nutrition advices based on the development of the country.
  • To conduct state-required assessments on imported food and food safety examination.
  • To participate in developing legal provisions relating to the food quality standards for Vietnamese meals.
  • Implement other tasks requested by Ministry of Health.

7. In-demand Services

  • Research and apply scientic ndings in manufacturing and trading of nutritional products; receiving and transferring formulations and technological processes related to food and nutrition.
  • To provide nutritional examination and consultation services, and other services.
  • To collaborate with domestic and international industries and organizations in applying scientic research results.
  • To consult and conduct food testing services as required.
  • To provide training, re-training, and continuing education services on nutrition and food safety; food safety testing; biochemical testing and diagnosis of nutrition-related diseases by using innovated technology.
  • To research and evaluate nutrition status and food consumption.
  • To provide services related to direct export and import of nutritional products, functional food, publications, chemicals and medical-nutrition laboratory equipment.
