The progress of malnutrition reduction and the Zscores W/A, Zscores H/A and Zscores W/H was examined through national surveys on malnutrition among children under 5 years old from 1990 to 2004. Objective: To present the progress of child malnutrition in order to classify changes and to set up suitable outcome for the plan of child malnutrition control. Results: The prevalence of child malnutrition reduced rapidly: the prevalence of underweight from 45% in 1990 to 26.6% in 2004, with the average reduction in the period 1990-2000 was 1.3% per year. The prevalence of stunting was 56.5% in 1990 and 30.7% in 2004, the average reduction in the period 1990-2004 was 1.8% per year. The curves of Zscores of W/A, H/A and W/H showed that they tended to move to the NCHS reference. Conclusions: Reduction of malnutrition was uneven among ecological regions. There was a relationship between the reduction of malnutrition and the reduction of poor food households.

Tóm tắt: Các tác giả tiến hành phân tích số liệu điều tra tỷ lệ suy dinh dưỡng trẻ em dưới 5 tuổi (SDD) và phân phối các giá trị Zscores cân nặng/tuổi, chiều cao/tuổi, cân nặng/chiều cao từ 1990 đến 2004. Mục tiêu: Xem xét tiến triển SDD trẻ em dưới 5 tuổi nhằm xác định diễn biến và đề ra các chỉ tiêu thích hợp trong kế hoạch phòng chống SDD trẻ em. Kết quả: Tỷ lệ SDD trẻ em giảm nhanh: SDD thể nhẹ cân giảm từ 45% (năm 1990) xuống còn 25,2% năm 2005. Mức giảm trung bình 1990-2000 là 1,3 %/năm. Tỷ lệ SDD thấp còi năm 1990 là 56,5%, năm 2005 còn 29,6%. Mức giảm trung bình từ 1990-2005 là 1,8%/năm. Đường phân phối các giá trị Zscore cân nặng/tuổi, chiều cao/tuổi, cân nặng/chiều cao cho thấy rõ sự chuyển dịch tiến sang phía quần thể tham khảo quốc tế. Kết luận: Mức giảm SDD không đều ở các vùng sinh thái khác nhau. Có sự liên quan về mức giảm SDD và mức giảm hộ nghèo lương thực thực phẩm.
