Hiện nay, ở tầm quốc gia, nước ta đã có được an ninh lương thực, nhưng chưa đảm bảo chắc chắn an ninh thực phẩm và dinh dưỡng hộ gia đình. Nguy cơ mất ATTP và dinh dưỡng hộ gia đình càng cao trong bối cảnh thay đổi khí hậu năng lượng sinh học và khủng hoảng tài chính toàn cầu. Trong khi thiếu dinh dưỡng còn là vấn đề sức khỏe cộng đồng thì tỷ lệ thừa dinh dưỡng biểu hiện bằng thừa cân béo phì (TC-BP), rối loạn chuyển hóa và các bệnh mãn tính không lây liên quan đến dinh dưỡng như đái tháo đường, tăng huyết áp, loãng xương, ung thư,…đang gia tăng rất nhanh, nhất là ở các vùng đô thị. Việt Nam cần có các chính sách và biện pháp toàn diện phối hợp liên ngành như tăng cường dự trữ LTTP thực hiện có hiệu quả Chiến lược an ninh lương thực quốc gia (Bộ NN&PTNT), Chiến lược Quốc gia dinh dưỡng 2001-2010 (NNS Bộ Y tế), Chương trình mục tiêu Quốc gia phòng chống SDD trẻ em (PEMC- Bộ Y tế), đặc biệt là triển khai có hiệu quả hoạt động dinh dưỡng ở tuyến cơ sở, chủ động phòng chống SDD bào thai, cân nặng sơ sinh thấp và SDD đầu đời, góp phần cải thiện tăng trưởng tầm vóc chiều cao đồng thời ngăn ngừa TC-BP và các bệnh mãn tính không lây.

Though food security is observed nationalwide, there is still a  risk of food shortageat  households in some disadvantaged areas of Vietnam. The  risk has been predicted and reported increases as a consequences of climate changes  and financial crisis globally. On the other hand, while foodshortage and undernourish remains at alarm high  in some  areas, over- nutrition and related  issues  emerge significantlyamong urban residents. Overweight, obesity, metabolic  syndrome, CVD, cancer, opsteomalacia, and  other NCD diseases increase rapidly in cities of Vietnam. More  than  ever, there is an urgent need for policies toensure  food security at household level. A master plan which integrates agencies, increases food storage, enforces the national  strategy for food security, malnutrition control program,and effectively implements nutrition activities at  local  settings such  as controlling of low birth weight and early undernutrition, improvince Vietnamese health  status, and prevention of NCD diseases is some of essential solutions to ensure food security at household level and quality of population.
