Một nghiên cứu bệnh - chứng được thực hiện trên 226 trường hợp trẻ sơ sinh tử vong trong năm 2004, và 227 trẻ sinh trong thời gian từ 1/1/2004 đến 31/12/2004 hiện còn sống (cùng giới, cùng độ tuổi và cùng địa bàn với trẻ tử vong) trên toàn bộ 232 xã phường tại  Hà Nội cho thấy: Tỷ suất tử vong sơ sinh toàn thành phố Hà Nội năm 2004 là: 7,35%o, ngoại thành 9,9 ‰, cao hơn nội thành, 5,6‰), cao nhất tại huyện Sóc Sơn 13,9%0. Tử vong sơ sinh sớm (1-7 ngày) chiếm tới 86,8% tổng số tử vong, trong đó một nửa là tử vong ngay trong ngày đầu tiên. Đa số tử vong sơ sinh là do đẻ thấp cân (58,8%), sau đến dị tật bẩm sinh (13,6%), bệnh hô hấp (7,95%). Trẻ sơ sinh có cân nặng thấp (<2.500g) có nguy cơ tử vong cao gấp 38 lần trẻ có cân nặng >=2.500g. Trẻ đẻ non (< 37 tuần tuổi) có nguy cơ cân nặng lúc đẻ thấp cao gấp 176 lần và nguy cơ tử vong cao gấp 58 lần trẻ đẻ đủ tháng. Bà mẹ trong suốt thời kỳ mang thai tăng không đủ cân (dưới 10 kg) có nguy cơ sinh con cân nặng thấp cao gấp 4.9 lần và nguy cơ tử vong ở con cao gấp 2 lần so với bà mẹ tăng đủ cân (từ 10 kg trở lên).

A case-control study was carried out in 226 dead newborns in 2004 and 227 alive infants born in the period from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2004 (matched by sex, age, and location with the dead newborns) in 232 communes of Hanoi. The results were as follows: In 2004, the neonatal mortality rate in Hanoi city was 7.35%o. It was higher in the suburbs (9.9%o) than in the inner city, 5.6%o. The highest rate was in Soc Son district, 13.9%o. Newborns died early within 1-7 days after delivery accounted for 86.8% of the total dead newborns, and half of them died in the first day of life. The major causes of deaths were due to low birth weight (58.8%), followed by congenital malformation (13.6%), respiratory diseases (7.95%) and others. The risk of death of the newborns with less than 2500 grams was 38 times higher than that of those with 2500 grams or more. Comparing to mature newborns, the premature ones (<37 weeks of gestation) were at 176 times higher the risk of having low birth weight and 58 times higher the risk of death. Comparing to mothers with adequate weight gain during pregnancy (10 kg or more), mothers gained less than 10 kg in the pregnant period were at 4.9 times higher the risk of having a low birth weight baby and double the risk of having a dead newborn.
