On April 25-26, 2023 and May 9-10, 2023, the Institute of Nutrition organized a conference on "Guidelines for nutrition activities in national target programs" in the Northern region and "Guidelines for nutrition activities in national target programs" in the Southern region with the participation of representatives of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control of provinces/cities nationwide, Yen Bai Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and representatives of UNICEF in Vietnam.
With the aim of enhancing the capacity of provinces and Regional Institutes in planning and implementing professional nutrition activities in the National Target Programs in 2023, with the support of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Institute of Nutrition organized a technical guidance conference for the northern provinces in Sa Pa town, Lao Cai province and a conference for the southern provinces in Pleiku city, Gia Lai province. The conference was chaired by Dr. Nguyen Van Chi, Deputy Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, Ministry of Health and Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Duong, Director of the Institute of Nutrition.
Reporting at the conference, the reporters of the Institute of Nutrition presented and discussed the guidelines for implementing the Nutrition Improvement content in the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction such as guidelines for developing annual plans, guidelines for financial management, guidelines for professional work, monitoring, reporting, models and guidelines for training and communication.
In particular, the conference included a sharing of lessons learned, difficulties and challenges in planning activities under the National Target Program by representatives of the provinces and the Opinions of the Department of Planning and Finance - Ministry of Health in guiding administrative procedures for activities under the program. These are the difficulties and challenges in recent years in implementing the activities of the Target Program to ensure compliance with professional content and state regulations.
Speaking at the meeting, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Duong emphasized, "To ensure the health of mothers and children, and improve the stature and physical strength of Vietnamese people, we need to continue implementing nutrition improvement programs."
The conference ended with an introduction and field visit to the model of improving community-based child care and feeding practices in Sapa (Lao Cai) and the Mang Yang Model of Management and Treatment of Acute Malnutrition in Children (Gia Lai).
